MEMBER RECOGNITION

Bradley Stoughton Award

The Lehigh Valley Chapter of ASMI established the Bradley Stoughton Award in 1944. It recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of engineered materials.
Bradley Stoughton (1873-1959) was President of ASM in 1942. His distinguished career included teaching and administrative positions at MIT, Columbia University, and Lehigh University, where he served as Head of the Department of Metallurgy and Dean of Engineering for 35 years. In addition, he was a consulting metallurgist for 21 years.

Dr. Stoughton gave his time without stint to his students, guiding and inspiring them to many outstanding metallurgical achievements. His intimate knowledge of theoretical and practical problems in the manufacture of steel led him to an international reputation in the field.

2009 Bradley Stoughton Award recipient: Rick Frank

Rick has been with Carpenter Tchnology Corporation for his entire professional career and has seen a steady increase in responsibility and expertise throughout his 31 years in research and development. Rick joined Carpenter in 1978 as a Lab Assistant in the High Temperature Alloy R&D Group. Upon receiving his B.S. Degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Lafayette College in 1983, Rick remained in the High Temperature Alloy R&D group where he made a steady advancement from Associate Metallurgist, to Metallurgist, to Senior Metallurgist, to Specialist, and to most recently: Staff Specialist-High Temperature R&D. Rick has been instrumental in Carpenter's efforts to become a premier producer of high temperature alloys and superalloys. His work has analyzed these alloys both as fundamental systems to be studied in a laboratory and as real-world alloys that undergo large scale commercial production processes. Much of Carpenter's knowledge base on the processing and behavior of nickel and cobalt based alloys arises from Rick's work. In 1989, Rick was a recipient of the Warren F. Savage award for contributions to the understanding of welding metallurgy. Rick also holds patents for the development of Carpenter Custom Age 625 PLUS alloy and improvements to intergranular stress corrosion cracking resistance of nickel-base alloys.
