Revolutionary Inventions in Rolling Technology in 20th Century
The story of Tadeusz Sendzimir—inventor, entrepreneur and visionary of the metal forming industry

Wojciech Z. Misiolek, Institute for Metal Forming, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA

ABSTRACT:
The author had a privilege attending Dr. Tadeusz Sendzimir lectures at the AGH - University of Science and Technology in Krakow in the late 1970-ies. This initial contact allowed exchange of ideas related to the metal forming processes and led to his ten months scholarship at Lehigh University supported by the Kosciuszko Foundation in 1987. Dr. Tadeusz Sendzimir was an extraordinary inventor whose ideas revolutionized and shaped the metal forming industry, especially the rolling technology, in the world. The steel galvanizing method together with the Z-mill, which he introduced many years ago are still being used and are considered the major inventions in the field. Dr. Sendzimir is an author of over 120 patents and recipient of many awards from professional societies from all over the world. The life of Dr. Sendzimir is the story of his activities in many countries (Poland, China, USA, France) where he worked and developed his innovations and inventions. His technical accomplishments were the fruit of his genius and work of many coworkers all over the world. The presentation will highlight technical contributions of Dr. Sendzimir and his life in different part of the world, which influenced many engineering developments. His unique relation with his oldest son Michael, who became his major business partner will be emphasized as well.
