ASM International – Lehigh
Valley Chapter
Our most recent program year was full of activity as the Lehigh
Valley Chapter undertook the challenges of exceeding the expectations
of our members and our parent society. Our activities this year
were geared toward providing service to our local membership, to
ASM International and to our surrounding community.
Local Membership
Overall, networking opportunities, professional recognition and
convenient communications helped us meet our members’ needs.
We had one of the most successful program years in recent history
with topics ranging from metallurgy of firearms by Chapter Member
Karl Funk to Offshoring Implications by Carpenter CEO Anne Stevens.
Our January Sustaining Member recognition night at Air Products
drew over 100 attendees to a tour and presentation at their Trexlertown
HQ.
Our members also enjoy the opportunity
for professional recognition that comes with notable contributions
to Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and to the Chapter.
Local awards include the Chapter’s The
Bradley Stoughton Award—honoring Dr. Stoughton, former
Chairman of the Lehigh Valley Chapter, and The
Outstanding Young Member Award—given for MSE contributions
and Chapter leadership. The Chapter also sponsors submissions for
national honors. This year three chapter members were elected Fellows
of the Society, and member Robert J. Torcolini was awarded a Distinguished
Service Award by the International. It’s through this type
of significant acknowledgement that we are able to help our members
gain the professional recognition that they deserve.
Our Materials
Camp at Lehigh University continues to draw top caliber students
and to garner national attention – with articles
appearing in both Society journals and educational journals. Sixteen
students participated in this summer’s materials camp, which
continues to be run by graduate student members. We also continued
to sponsor awards at the Berks County Science Fair and the Pennsylvania
Junior Academy of Science – both in the Lehigh Valley and
in Northeastern PA. Through this work, the Chapter pursued the
goals of the Materials Education Foundation—“To excite
young people in materials, science and engineering careers.”
Above all, the service to our local membership
hinges on communication. This year, our regular communication
tools were significantly improved. A major overhaul of our Chapter
website resulted in a professional, standardized layout capable
of the convenience features needed. A semi-annual newsletter
reinforced significant Chapter dates and contact information
for members. Furthermore, regular use of the ASM web server e-mail
utility kept us in touch with “e-enabled” members.
ASM International
The mission of both the local
chapter and ASM International is to serve as the leading professional
society for members of the materials science community. As such,
the society provides unparalleled resources of materials information
resources to its members and the world at large. This information
is contained in extensive, searchable online databases and handbooks
and in a vast array of traditional publications – from monthly
peer-reviewed journals, to encyclopedic multi-volume handbooks,
to single volume in depth treatments of specific topics. A great
deal of the society’s
efforts are focused on education, both for the materials community
and about materials to the broader world. Some of our most well-known
texts and courses are the “Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist” family
and other courses designed to introduce other technical professionals
to the particulars of our field. We also attempt to enhance the
profile of materials and materials science at the high school
level, where the field is traditionally under-represented.
The
International also acts to provide resources to the affiliate
chapters for planning, oversight and financial management. A substantial
portion of the society’s membership dues are returned to
the local chapter and form the bulk of the local’s operating
revenue. As a society representing tens of thousands of professionals,
the International has also negotiated a substantial number of discounts
and other benefits to its members.
